A Place Only We Know
Driving her on a country road,
with the windows rolled down and the speakers blown.
A hot summers day, bathing suits showing,
a grin and a wink lets the dominoes start falling.
Their hearts start racing,
the dirt road starts to end at the foot of a lake;
he asks, “Wanna jump in?”
She smiles and says, “Race you!’
A tie is what they call it now.
The water is inviting,
nature surrounding
their complete exclusion
with just the rays of orange and red highlighting.
The still lake reflects her trance like eyes
at the site of his belonging.
He catches his breath
stolen by her eased presence.
A combination of laughter and arms;
his neck, her waist.
The water ripples
like a pebble being dropped
into still water,
every ripple quietly washes the essence of themselves away
joining the rocks and soils beneath the lake.
With the moonlight now watching,
they rush to the blanket in the bed of his truck,
legs intertwined
arms holding one another,
they gaze at the sky
thinking.
A shooting star proving the time is now,
make it happen; tell her your vow…
as her head nodded against his chest as she responded with a “Yes”…
